‘The Lights’ Biography
West Londoners, The Lights, is the brainchild
of electronic wunderkind Mat Lester.
Having earned his stripes in rock bands throughout his college
years, Mat, using the moniker ‘Monoman’ recorded four-track
demos, receiving positive response.’
‘Monoman’ released the ‘X-phile’
single in 1999 which garnered the attention of XFM, making it their
record of the week. ‘Brothers on the K’ followed in
2000, with similarly impressive plaudits.
Dropping the moniker, Mat locked himself away and returned, fusing
his new work with assistance from reliable allies. Drafting in close
friends Imogen Andrews and Ryan Caine on vocals, The Lights have
broken free of their bedroom confines and seek to inspire on a much
broader scale.
The early single releases through Seeca
– ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Raise Your Hand’
- Lifted The Lights’ platform, and 2005’s XFM playlisted
single ‘No Conditions’ placed them at the top step of
the underground – Looking back just wasn’t an option.
‘Good As It Gets’ and the full
release of debut album ‘Grand Union’ should speak volumes
in 2006. The Lights have created inspirational mood music –
atmospheric pop with a bitter edge, pooling their sources and gently
pouring them out in a lake of sublime, sultry effervescence.
